Specialist Physiotherapy is Coming to Lower Limb Clinic — Here's What That Means for Belfast

    17 April 20267 min read

For more than a decade, Lower Limb Clinic has been Belfast's specialist destination for foot, ankle and lower limb problems. We diagnose and treat with diagnostic ultrasound. We deliver shockwave therapy and ultrasound-guided injections for chronic pain. We design and manufacture custom 3D-printed orthotics in-house. We see runners, golfers, footballers, office workers, teachers, retirees — anyone who needs someone who actually knows the lower limb.

And for more than a decade, there has been one consistent gap in what we could offer.

    Rehab.

That changes in August 2026, when Lower Limb Clinic launches its specialist physiotherapy service at both Belfast clinics.

    Why We're Adding Physiotherapy

Every experienced podiatrist knows the pattern. You diagnose the problem properly. You deliver a precise intervention — maybe an ultrasound-guided injection, maybe a course of shockwave therapy, maybe a well-designed custom orthotic. The patient gets better.

Then a few months later, it comes back.

Sometimes that's biology. But very often it's because the diagnosis-and-intervention phase is only half the job. The other half is rehab: the progressive loading, the strength work, the movement retraining, the return-to-activity programming that stops the problem from recurring. That's physiotherapy's domain. And if we can't deliver it alongside everything else we do, we're handing patients off to external physios, losing continuity of care, and accepting higher recurrence rates than we have to.

So from August 2026, we're closing that loop. Our new specialist physiotherapy service sits alongside our existing podiatry, sports medicine and diagnostics — under one roof, with one team, one set of records, one clinical conversation.

    What Makes Our Physiotherapy Different

There are plenty of good physiotherapists in Belfast. If you're just looking for generalist physio, you won't be short of options. What we're building is specifically MSK and sports-focused, and it's designed to fit the patients we already see — the ones coming to us with complex foot, ankle and lower limb problems, and increasingly, the ones with shoulder, elbow and neck issues too.

Three things will set our physiotherapy apart:

    1. VALD objective testing — not subjective "feels 80%" rehab

Our specialist assessments will use VALD ForceDecks force plates and VALD muscle dynamometry — the same objective testing technology used by Premiership football clubs, Olympic programmes and leading sports medicine departments worldwide.

What that means in practice: when you come in with a knee injury, we don't just ask if it "feels stronger" than last month. We measure it — in Newtons, in asymmetry percentages, in jump height and reactive strength. Every rehab decision is anchored to real data. Return-to-sport becomes a data-backed call, not a guess. This is the kind of testing most physio clinics in Northern Ireland simply don't have.

    2. Integrated with diagnostic ultrasound, shockwave and orthotics

Most private physiotherapy services operate in isolation — assess, treat, discharge. Ours won't. Our physiotherapist will work alongside clinicians trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound-guided injection, shockwave therapy, and biomechanical custom orthotics. If your rehab needs more than exercise alone — if you need imaging to confirm a diagnosis, an injection to calm inflammation before loading, a shockwave protocol to accelerate a stubborn tendinopathy, or an orthotic to change your loading pattern — all of that happens in the same clinic, coordinated by the same team.

    3. BUPA & WPA recognised from launch

Our physiotherapy service will be recognised by BUPA and WPA from the opening day, in line with our existing MSK recognition. Eligible patients will be able to claim physiotherapy sessions through their private health insurance the same way our existing patients currently claim for pain and injury assessments, shockwave therapy and injection therapy.

See our BUPA page and WPA page for more on how insurance claiming works with us.

    Lower Limb and Upper Limb

Our physiotherapy service will treat both ends of the body:

    Lower Limb Physiotherapy

This is the natural extension of our existing work. Running injury rehab (Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, ITBS, PFPS, shin splints, plantar fasciitis), tendinopathy loading programmes, post-injection rehab, post-surgical rehab after ankle, Achilles or ACL procedures, and staged return-to-sport programming built around your target pace, distance or sport.

    Upper Limb Physiotherapy

Shoulder, elbow, wrist and neck rehab — rotator cuff tendinopathy and tears, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), tennis and golfer's elbow, post-surgical shoulder rehab, and mechanical neck pain. One of the only Belfast physiotherapy services with in-house musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injection available when rehab needs to combine with medical treatment.

    Who This Is For

If you fit any of these, you'll want to be on our waitlist:

    • Runners with persistent injuries — Achilles pain that won't settle, recurrent calf strains, stubborn plantar fasciitis, shin splints that return every training block, knee pain that only shows up after mileage
    • Post-op patients needing structured rehab after ankle, Achilles, ACL, meniscal, shoulder or rotator cuff surgery
    • Patients we've already treated who've had shockwave or injection therapy and want the proper rehab programme to lock in the result
    • Weekend athletes carrying a nagging shoulder, elbow or knee that's stopping them getting back to sport
    • Desk workers with chronic neck or shoulder problems that haven't responded to generic physio
    • Anyone wanting data-driven rehab rather than "feels about 80%" guesses — VALD testing gives you measurable progress

A Quick Note on the Clinic's Identity

Some readers will reasonably ask: is Lower Limb Clinic becoming a physiotherapy clinic?

No. Our identity is unchanged. We remain Belfast's specialist podiatry, chiropody and sports medicine clinic — that's our core, that's what we've built over 15 years, that's what our 700+ five-star reviews reflect. If you're not sure whether you need chiropody or podiatry, our explainer on chiropody vs podiatry is the place to start.

Physiotherapy is an extension of the clinical pathway we already run, not a replacement for any of it. When we diagnose you, treat you, or fit you for orthotics, the rehab stage can now happen in the same building with the same team. That's the point.
