    What are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures are tiny cracks in bone caused by repetitive force or overuse, often from jumping or running long distances. They're common in the weight-bearing bones of the foot and lower leg.

Unlike acute fractures from sudden injury, stress fractures develop gradually. They're particularly common in athletes and military personnel but can affect anyone who suddenly increases their activity level.

    Common Symptoms

    • Pain that develops gradually over time
    • Pain that worsens with activity
    • Pain that improves with rest
    • Swelling on top of the foot or ankle
    • Tenderness at a specific spot
    • Pain that becomes constant if ignored

    Common Causes

    • Sudden increase in training intensity
    • Change in training surface
    • Poor footwear or worn-out shoes
    • Biomechanical abnormalities
    • Low bone density (osteoporosis)
    • Poor nutrition or vitamin D deficiency
    • Female athlete triad

    How We Treat Stress Fractures

We use clinical examination and imaging to confirm diagnosis, then develop a structured recovery plan. This includes activity modification, addressing contributing factors, and a gradual return-to-sport programme. Where biomechanical overload contributed to the injury, custom orthotics help manage load and lower the risk of it happening again.

    Immobilisation

Protective boot or cast to allow bone healing while maintaining some mobility.

    Activity Modification

Guided reduction in weight-bearing activity with cross-training alternatives.

    Biomechanical Correction

Orthotics and gait analysis to reduce stress on vulnerable areas.

    Graduated Return to Sport

Structured programme to safely return to full activity without re-injury.
