    What is Shockwave Therapy?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic pressure waves and is used as an option for selected musculoskeletal conditions. The quality of evidence and expected benefit vary by condition, so it is recommended only after an appropriate clinical assessment.

At Lower Limb Clinic, we use ESWT for selected persistent heel and tendon problems that have not improved with initial care. Your clinician will explain why it may or may not be suitable, the uncertainties in the evidence, and the alternatives available for your diagnosis.

    Common Symptoms

    • Chronic heel pain lasting more than 3 months
    • Morning stiffness in the Achilles tendon
    • Pain that worsens with activity
    • Tenderness at the heel or tendon insertion
    • Swelling around the affected area
    • Pain that hasn't improved with rest

    Common Causes

    • Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
    • Achilles tendinopathy (including insertional Achilles and Haglund's deformity)
    • Calcific tendinitis
    • Tennis/golfer's elbow
    • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
    • Chronic muscle trigger points

    Our Treatment Approach

Our shockwave therapy protocol is evidence-based and tailored to your specific condition. Treatment typically involves 3-6 sessions, spaced one week apart, with each session lasting approximately 15-20 minutes.

During treatment, the shockwave applicator is applied directly to the affected area. You may experience mild discomfort during the procedure, but this is generally well-tolerated. Response varies, so progress is reviewed during the course and again over the following weeks.

We combine shockwave therapy with a comprehensive rehabilitation programme including targeted exercises, biomechanical assessment, and custom orthotics where clinically appropriate. The aim is to address symptoms while rebuilding the tissue's capacity to tolerate load.

We provide shockwave therapy at both Lower Limb clinics in Belfast, on the Lisburn Road and the Ormeau Road, so treatment is close to home wherever you are in the city. Patients travel to us from across Belfast and Northern Ireland for treatment of chronic heel and tendon pain.
