What are Fungal Nail Infections?
Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is one of the most common nail conditions, affecting up to 10% of the population. The infection causes nails to become thickened, discoloured, brittle, and sometimes painful.
Fungal infections are caused by dermatophyte fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. They can spread between toenails and to other people. Left untreated, the infection typically worsens over time and can become uncomfortable when wearing shoes.
Common Symptoms
- Thickened, crumbly, or brittle nails
- Yellow, brown, or white discolouration
- Nails separating from the nail bed
- Distorted nail shape
- Foul odour from affected nails
- Debris build-up under the nail
- Pain when wearing shoes
Common Causes
- Dermatophyte fungal infection
- Walking barefoot in communal areas (pools, gyms)
- Excessive foot perspiration
- Minor nail or skin injuries
- Poor peripheral circulation
- Diabetes or weakened immune system
- Athlete's foot (can spread to nails)
