What is Capsulitis?
Capsulitis is inflammation of the ligaments surrounding the joints at the base of the toes (metatarsophalangeal joints). It most commonly affects the second toe but can occur in any toe joint.
Without proper treatment, capsulitis can lead to toe dislocation or crossover toe, where the affected toe drifts toward the big toe. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing these complications.
Common Symptoms
- Pain in the ball of the foot near the toes
- Feeling like there's a stone in your shoe
- Swelling at the base of the toe
- Pain when walking barefoot
- Toe beginning to drift or cross over
- Difficulty wearing certain shoes
Common Causes
- Abnormal foot mechanics
- Bunion causing pressure redistribution
- Second toe longer than big toe
- Unstable arch or tight calf muscles
- High-heeled or unsupportive shoes
- Trauma or repetitive stress
How We Treat Capsulitis
We take capsulitis seriously because early treatment is essential to prevent permanent damage. Our approach combines offloading the affected joint, addressing biomechanical issues, and reducing inflammation. Offloading the joint often involves custom insoles that take pressure off the inflamed area while it settles.
